Way back in 1995 I started at James Cook University in townsville.
There I started doing a degree in electronic engineering. At that stage I had an interest into electronics
and computers. I soon came to the conclusion that I didn't drink enough beer (I don't like beer!) to do
engineering so I changed from an engineering degree to a degree in science majoring in computers.
So in 1996 I stared my science degree, finding out that I actually liked doing system
administration/programming more than I liked learning about it. So I got a job at a local ISP (Ultranet).
I continued at uni until 1999 going thru phases of enjoying uni/hating work, then hating uni/enjoying work.
This could be seen in my grades, they were like a sine wave P D HD D P D ... etc.
So in 1999 I moved to wollongong after getting offered a job at the
University of Wollongong which ironicly enough is actually
in wollongong :). I continued my studies at UOW. They have given me credit for most of the
subjects I completed at JCU and I'm part-time working towards completing.
The only reason I'm continuing with my degree at this late stage is because it seems
companies are still looking for that all important bit of paper that tells them you've been to Uni.
Shame really as the one thing I've learnt going to Uni is they don't teach you anything about the
practical side of thing. It's all theory now. Theory in system administration not only isn't close to
what happens (ok some of it is) but it's normally obsolite before it gets printed!.
